Giving an Art ProjectBy Laura Solberg

Project: Soup Bowl Painting
Group: approx. 13 students age 9 12
Time: We took 2 sessions (2hours each) to complete this project (including discussion time). The bowl sale was about 1.5hours long over a lunch hour at a coffee shop in a local office building.
Materials: Bisque ware soup bowls Ceramic paint Glaze Soft bristle paint brushes
Objective: To learn about ceramic painting. To encourage creativity in the ways which we can help other people. To get kids excited about helping other people by giving.
Instructions: For our discussion we talked about various aspects of giving: why its important; how we, in North America have a lot compared to other areas of the world; how there are people who are less fortunate than us living right in our own city.
Give a brief overview of ceramic painting (patterns vs. pictures; paint absorbs into ceramics; color becomes more vibrant after firing). The kids then sketched out their ideas on paper first because once you paint on the ceramic it is difficult/impossible to erase it! We tried to encourage patterns over pictures, and reminded them to take their time because these bowls were going to be sold to other people.
After the bowls were painted, they were glazed and let to dry. We had a local ceramics shop donate the firing.
Comments: We did this project in December, so it was a good time to talk about the importance of giving. We talked about how fortunate we are in North America to have so much, and how if we are creative we can make a difference by giving of our time and resources to other people. I had the majority of the bowls donated, and all the firing. A local coffee shop owner let us use her shop for our bowl sale, and had her soup provider donate the soup to us. We advertised our sale at the school and in the building that the coffee shop was located. All of the money from the sale went to the local food-bank.
