I have been serving youth for the past 12 years. I started out volunteering in the Anglican church developing the youth program for the deanery. Then I was hired to run both the youth program and the Christian Education pro-gram in a sister church. This Christian Education program gives me the opportunity to work with children from birth up to adults including parents. I started at YFC 3 years ago in a partnership agreement to run both the youth program in the Alliance Church as well as being a high school outreach worker. In a short time it became quite evident that I was to develop ministry partnerships with local churches, communities and YFC to assist in developing after-school programs for youth throughout Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
Presently I am: • Running 4 programs in 3 areas of Peterborough.
- Check out the Kawartha YFC website:
I am also: • Developing leaders to run area specific programs, train and mentor
volunteers and student (high school age) leaders. • Meeting with youth in their living space (football games, dog walks, etc...). • Developing programming specific to each church and community. • Developing partnerships with the city to further both ministry and
community awareness. (i.e: the health unit will fund and partner a
cooking program. The city would like to rent housing in the government
housing complex where we would help to run programs). • Sharing insight and encouragement with churches considering starting
programs. • Sharing in staff committees and prayer groups. • Mentoring parents and youth; taking them to church or Bible studies.
Melissa’s reflections: I particularly love watching youth, families, communities and churches coming together and living Jesus in the world they know. I mostly enjoy watching my community kids start going to church, or moms recognizing that nurturing their children spiritually is as valuable as nurturing them physically, emotionally and mentally. It is wonderful when parents go to Bible study or become the volunteers in the program their children are involved in. ‘The sky’s the limit’ when God is at work!
