Childcare Coodinator for Stepping Stones
Children: range from ages 2 months to 7 years old
Prior to coming to YFC staff, I:
-
attended UCFV (University College of the Fraser Valley) to attain my Early Childhood Education Certificate where I earned a place on the Dean's List of Distinguished Students
-
have my Associates Degree in Psychology
-
have plans to finish my BA in Child and Youth Care in the near future
I have been a part of the Stepping Stones staff working as the Childcare Coordinator in Surrey for YFC Greater Vancouver since January 2007.
While the teen-moms are taking their life skills program,
(a 14-week Thrive Program), the Stepping Stones staff are:
- caring for the children from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday thru Thrusday
-
actively teaching life skills to the children at their developmental level
-
encouraging the children and making them feel special
-
building them up with knowledge about themes we feel are important for their success in life such as:
-
All about Me
-
Family
-
God
-
Love
-
Helping
Our curriculum is an emerging one which depends on the developmental level and age of the group in each session. The themes stay the same, but the approach and activities have to remain flexible due to our various ages and group dynamics. We have so much fun exploring, experiencing and learning. Some of our activities include:
-
painting
-
play-doh
-
science
-
math
-
story-telling
-
cooking
-
and much more
Susan's reflections:
I have been a singe young mom myself and understand the complexities and challenges of raising a child without the preparedness for the task. There have been many times while raising my own children where I had hoped to provide more for them but because of circumstances was not able to. Out of my lack to provide many things for my children, God has put a desire in my heart to help Him provide for other children. I see the value and importance of investing into children at a young age and take a preventative psychology approach to their needs.
Susan's goals:
My goal is to equip children with the skills and insight they need to deal with adversity and to nurture their relationship with Jesus in a very personal and practical way. I look forward to serving the young families in my community by creating and maintaining a quality childcare experience that will enhance and enrich the lives of the children who attend.
