AN IDEA FOR CORE FRENCH TEACHERS:

I have developed a French unit based on the English video, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" for second and third year FSL students.  The basic plot of the story centres around Charlie Brown's search for the meaning of Christmas.  Lucy decides that Charlie Brown is going to direct their Christmas play.  In the end, Linus reads about Jesus' birth from the Bible.  ("And that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.")

We watch the English video and then the French video.  We do some literacy and art activities and then break into groups of six to present the play.

I am in the process of putting this on computer (and I'm really slow at technology!).  If you would like a copy of it just e-mail me at and I will get it to you in the next 2 months.

  • I have taught French and Music in York Region (just north of Toronto) for way more years than I would ever admit to
  • I love working with my students in grades 1 to 5
  • hate the paperwork,
  • enjoy my colleagues,
  • (could do without meetings)
  • get a kick out of conducting the Junior Choir each year.
Trish's reflections:
In such a diverse community as Markham it is always a challenge to come up with new ways to weave the Good News of Jesus into Music and French without getting the boot.  So much just comes down to winning the right, through commitment to excellence in teaching, to speak openly about faith and allowing students to share their songs, CDs, holiday celebrations and culture with their peers.
